Writer/Director MOON Hong-sik
During the Japanese annexation
of Korea before 1945 and post Korean War times, the
circus was one of few cultural performances that comforted
the Korean people's 'Han' and sadness. However, the
reality of the Korean circus then was that it lacked
the luster of those in the West. The film is based on
the true story of a circus performer and his illiterate
daughter, Sunyoung as they try to overcome their difficulties.
Their life story is not only about Sunyoung's disabilities,
but also a reflection of adverse aspects in society.
Mr. MOON Hong-sik, playwright
as well as a director on stage, makes his debut as a
director and producer on screen. He is working as a
special class teacher at a high school and publishing
a book on movie production and theories behind making
a movie. He has put all of his savings and his house
in order to raise funds for the production. In the history
of Korean short films, this movie has set the record
in longest movie production time with 12 months, highest
production cost and most number of appearances by actors. |
